Of some of your favorite songs, which one(s) would you want The Features to cover? I have some pretty abstract ideas about this one. I would like to hear a Features version of "Walk Like An Egyptian," although I know that I may suffer rejection from the board for this choice. I can't even imagine Matt singing, "All the school kids so sick of books, they like the punk and the metal bands..." I used to be into The Bangles a lot, and lately I have been listening to a few songs here and there again. I would be interested to see how they would rearrange the song...Plus I would like the use of a tambourine involved. I have lots of songs on my mind, but I would like to see if anyone thinks along my kind of lines. I figured that no one would list that song, so it was safe. So, do tell. |

i think they should cover d'yer mak'er. i'm not sure why, but it struck me at work the other day. maybe i'm nuts. i noticed that on a similar topic somebody mentioned the rainbow connection, by a certain kermit the frog. i love that song. creator of muppets, writer of great songs- what else could one want of jim henson? Wow. Everything does truly come around full circle. This was, I believe, one of the very first topics ever on the Features MB. I imagine the suggestions will be very, very different now. I will now recycle some of my favorite suggestions from the original topic: 'Non-Alignment Pact' Pere Ubu (lawnwrangler) 'Helicopter' XTC (lawnwrangler) 'I Want You (She's So Heavy)' the Beatles (brianeno2) 'Billie Jean' Michael Jackson (brianeno2) 'My My Hey Hey' Neil Young (seeMEthru) 'Flying' Badfinger (jamiecarroll) 'Rudderless' the Lemonheads (jamiecarroll) 'Virginia Plain' Roxy Music (roadie) I will also officially add 'Walk Like an Egyptian' to that list, Stephanie. The Bangles, for the most part, are irrelevant. But that song is awesome. A 45 of that song was the first recording that I ever purchased. Also, I would like to add: 'Binario' by Komeda and 'Begin the Begin' by R.E.M. or 'Superman' by R.E.M. (Edited by jamiecarroll at 6:22 am on Jul. 29, 2002) -------------------- Relevant: Prince, PT Anderson, Punk, Post-Punk, Purple, Party of Five, Peter Swanson, Peter Gabriel-led Genesis, "Peter Panic", Paul's Boutique, Potential Energy, Every Features MB member but me. |

It would be so great if they saw our suggestions and decided to do an all cover show based our input. I realize that's a lot easier said than done, and besides as fans we probably don't deserve the awesomeness of such sonic pleasure. Besides, I would miss all of The Features OWN material. My suggestions: Building Atlantis- by Josh Clayton-Felt Not only an enjoyable song but it would be a nice tribute since Josh can't play it live himself. A Self song: Depending on which one I would venture to say The Features could pull it off a lot better. Baba O'Reilly- The Who Yes everyone else has done it, but I would enjoy Matt doing some windmills, and Rollum can get really drunk for just this song. -------------------- I am a horse with no name. |

All I know is that everytime I hear that song I want to dance around...and if I am really hyper, I might dance 80's style. OK. Maybe not. All the same, The Features should cover it for sure. After all, that song rules me. |

I think anyone doin REM's "It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)" flawlessly would be great and if I can do it (and, come on, I'm me) then they can. But really, Parrish's keyboards and See You Through-style handclaps could make any song great. -------------------- ~Digsy S. Slattery My New York City Exploits |

This cover is straight outta the oldies catalog, but my vote is for "96 Tears," by ? and the Mysterions. If you're not familiar w/this lil' ditty, there is a lot of wicked keyboard that Parrish could go nuts with. I'd love to hear that someday...

96 tears is a good pick. I was listening to the oldies station last week & heard "Down in the Boondocks" by Billy Joe Royal & thought it would be a funny cover too. Not as badass of a song as 96 tears though. I also would like to hear them do "See No Evil" by Television (maybe with Parrish playing the lead guitar parts?) or "Close to Me" by the Cure.

God no, any song but "Dont pass me by". That's the worst song on the White Album besides "Revolution 9". I believe a better Beatles song from that era would be "Not Guilty". Parrish could do the hapsichord part and Matt could really work out on guitar at the end. Didnt mean to offend you, Damon. (Edited by ray davies at 11:36 am on Aug. 8, 2002) |

They should NOT cover Weezer. Bands currently making music should not be covered by any band trying to go somewhere. Even if they went back to Weezer's first album, that's far too recent. They should stick to covers from the 80s and before if they decide to add some to their set. I think it's good enough right now without a cover. -------------------- I can't grow a beard, and I don't like to party. ~Matthew Tiberius Pelham |

I disagree about not covering "new songs." I'll grant that that's true if you're going to cover the song exactly (or very similar to) how the original artist did it. But what about re-interpretations? Like Hendrix doing "All Along the Watchtower" or Johnny Cash doing "Rusty Cage" by Soundgarden? I think it's totally acceptable, and great even, to completely re-examine a "newer" song, like what Nickel Creek has done with Pavement and Elliot Smith songs. Like A Virgin Hungry Like the Wolf Heard It Through the Grapevine Sweet Child O' Mine all these were crafted very well. They're songs we all know, and they're songs we can get into. I think "Walk Like an Egyptian" of all that has been mentioned would fit with those. No, I didn't forget Psycho Killer or Laid. -------------------- I can't grow a beard, and I don't like to party. ~Matthew Tiberius Pelham |

You have a nice user name, but surely you should register. I think "Take on Me" could be a fun cover, but I don't think it matches the tone of the current Features set like it would have a few years back. "Buggin" would be a bit of a challenge. I don't know if they could make it sound dense enough, and I don't know if a guitar band playing it could do it justice. I can't and could never stand the Toadies. Good suggestions. Welcome. Ditto that for Blur's Song 2. However, I will revoke my earlier statements about them not doing Weezer in light of 2 rarities, Jamie and Suzanne, which are my 2 favorites from the entire Weezer catalog--and only thos a little bit. -------------------- I can't grow a beard, and I don't like to party. ~Matthew Tiberius Pelham |

I think "Happy Together" would be a great choice. The thing it would need for an effective Features version is for Roger's voice to be audible for the backing part...which has been a rare thing for the last 3 years or so.

"you gave your love to me softly" does indeed kick ass. however, i am partial to "i do". All Green B-Sides are better than at least 60% of what made the album... anyone else notice that? And four of them (Starlight, I Do, Teenage Victory Song, and O Lisa) were ready when the album came out. And it was less than half an hour and could have housed them.... Okay, yes, I'm still bitter in a general way about waiting 5 years for Green's result... Will -------------------- You may like grandma's yard gnomes, but I've seen Rock City. Remember it. |

I was looking through some older posts and came across this topic. I didn't read most of what everyone else posted so I'm not sure if this song has already been suggested or not, but if I could choose any song for the Features to cover it would be "Editions of You" by Roxy Music.

Has anyone seen this thread from the first time it ran through? I thought the selections were more mainstream and less topical than what most of you suggest--and that's more the pattern of covers the Features have always done. They played a neat show last November (at the dawn of this board) where they covered the Beatles' "I Feel Fine" and John Lennon's "Jealous Guy." I think there was some Neil Young thrown in there too to lengthen the set. Eno always suggested "Play Me Some Mountain Music", and I think that would rock. -------------------- I can't grow a beard, and I don't like to party. ~Matthew Tiberius Pelham |

I still think this thread, as long as it is, seems to me to be more of a discussion of really great songs than it is the Features. It's more like everyone is saying Hey! I just thought of a great song! Please affirm that you agree with me that this indeed is a great song! Oh yeah, there's this band called the Features. They play great songs!!! Maybe the two can go together!?!?!?! The problem is that the Features wouldn't do most of those songs, and it would probably work against what they're trying to do if they did cover those songs. Sorry, but "Interstellar Overdrive" and any Pink Floyd for that matter, as awesome as it is or isn't in any one's eyes, would not really help make a better Features set. I'm not saying this to insult anyone, I'm just pointing out that it isn't the Features' style. I think that with the exception of "Laid", the Features have always picked very recognizable songs from the 80s (or before in the case of Grapevine) and given a new spin on a good song which may not have had the best treatment when it was originally played in the studio (esp. Sweet Child o' Mine). Most of the songs mentioned in this thread don't really don't meet that. -------------------- I can't grow a beard, and I don't like to party. ~Matthew Tiberius Pelham |

(Edited by ray davies at 4:11 pm on Sep. 22, 2002) |

I still think this thread, as long as it is, seems to me to be more of a discussion of really great songs than it is the Features. It's more like everyone is saying Hey! It's also a thread that hadn't been replied to in four days that you just randomly decided to analyze. I don't really think that there should be some sort of hardcore criteria for what songs one should post. This post really is "I like this song, it would be great if the Features did it." So? Does that hurt anything? I really doubt that Rollum is going to read this and go "Yeah...yeah we DO need to cover Pink Floyd." The thread was laying dormant, let it sleep. -------------------- Relevant: Prince, PT Anderson, Punk, Post-Punk, Purple, Party of Five, Peter Swanson, Peter Gabriel-led Genesis, "Peter Panic", Paul's Boutique, Potential Energy, Every Features MB member but me. |

I would like to propose that we enact a new law on the Features Message Board: Henceforth, no member of the message board is allowed to believe that anything another member thinks or says is uncool. If someone joins this board, you are immediately obligated to find everything they post to be cool and worthwhile. Nothing good can ever come from critiquing other people's views or thoughts. Since neither the person who is offering constructive criticism nor the member receiving the feedback will be improved, we should forbid this sophomoric post-bashing. There shall, however, be one exception to this law. If someone joins with a name that obviously makes him uncool (i.e. "FeaturesRnotSoGood," "OsamaBinLaden," or "BritPopSux"), you cannot think what he says is cool. Again, notice that you still are not allowed to think about what he says; you must simply reject every post he submits. If you are caught thinking such people are cool, you will lose your avatar privileges. This new law will make sure that no one is offended and that this message board has banal, homogenous conversation. All in favor, please raise your hand. ~TF P.S. If this law doesn't pass, I think we should still consider legislation to limit our disagreeable thoughts. It's absurd for people to take more than 72 hours to contemplate a topic. If you can't formulate a response immediately after reading a post, you're obviously not very smart. -------------------- grass stains, airplanes, anything and everything |

Yep, TF, you're right on. We're nothing if we can't pat each other on the back & reinforce each other's high self-esteem, right? For details on the pact, you may want to consult the Patriot Act, or Tipper Gore for that matter. Both good examples of how to keep thoughts in line.

I would like to propose that we enact a new law on the Features Message Board: This new law will make sure that no one is offended and that this message board has banal, homogenous conversation. All in favor, please raise your hand. banal: adj 1: obvious and dull; "trivial conversation"; "commonplace prose" [syn: commonplace, trivial] 2: repeated too often; overfamiliar through overuse; "bromidic sermons"; "his remarks were trite and commonplace"; "hackneyed phrases"; "a stock answer"; "repeating threadbare jokes"; "parroting some timeworn axiom"; "the trite metaphor `hard as nails'" homogeneous: adj. Uniform in structure or composition throughout. TF...I don't know if you were serious or not...I'll assume so. Look...I love everyone here. EVERYONE. I don't agree with everyone on everything, but that doesn't mean that I don't like you or wish you would stop posting here. I don't think that anyone here is uncool. I'm serious. If I disagree with you on something, it doesn't mean that I think you're uncool. I think that a certain amount of disagreement and debate is healthy for this MB. How boring would it be if this MB were homogenous? One of the problems with the internet is that alot of the communicative powers are removed. Something can sound like someone is being an asshole, when that's not what they intend at all (I think alot of what I say falls into that category). THE BOTTOM line is: I raise my hand, I want nothing that I do or say here to make anyone feel uncool. But I hope it DOESN'T create a banal, homogenous society. That would be boring. We're all Features fans here. We have that in common and that's the bottom line. We all love the Features and we love each other. If we disagree sometimes, it's all in the name of honesty and healthy discussion. The problem is that the Features wouldn't do most of those songs, and it would probably work against what they're trying to do if they did cover those songs. Tears of a Clown - Smokey Robinson Happy Together - The Turtles I'm Always in Love - Wilco What a Fool Believes - Doobie Brothers Give Me Just a Little More Time - The Chairmen of the Board as fitting in the criteria of songs that sound like The Features might do them and that could contribute to the show, at least as much as, say, Grapevine. I certainly didn't suggest them to lavish love upon these bands who, apart from Wilco, I really don't know. And I like this thread. New submission: something by The Grass Roots, either Midnight Confession, I'd Wait a Million Years, or Temptation Eyes. TF...I don't know if you were serious or not...I'll assume so. I agree completely with you, Ms. Carroll. This message board is home to a wide variety of people. We don't all agree on stuff, and that's very healthy; without a wide range of viewpoints, you get a banal, homogenous community. We all need to realize that some people think about things differently. When I express my views by posting a message (i.e. suggesting a cover song), I'm making myself vulnerable to the community. You all have the right (and duty) to counter my point. Maybe I'll read your criticism and think, "Gee, they're right; I should think about my position a bit more." Or I can think, "No, I'm right because their arguments do not take into account the following facts..." Either way, everybody wins because we've all thought about something. I'm not, however, condoning personal attacks on other members, but that's not a problem here. I can't think of a single instance on this board when someone really just tore into someone else. When we disagree, it's always in the form of very civil, well-thought, constructive criticism. Re-read YDDD's post. He didn't say, "If you like Pink Floyd, you suck." He simply suggested that just because someone likes a song and likes the Features doesn't mean the two should go together. That's an interesting idea presented in a polite manner. It's healthy disagreement like this that makes the board worth reading. To sum up my last two posts in this topic (one sarcastic, one serious): It's very healthy for us to disagree. Don't get upset when it happens. Don't get defensive. Enjoy it, learn from it, and have a nice day. -------------------- grass stains, airplanes, anything and everything |

Yep, I think you're right TF & my smartass reply was in response to your sarcasm (which I thought was actually pretty funny). I think healthy debate & dialogue is always preferable to blind agreement. But if what we're voting on is to be civil, that sounds good to me. And, Jamie, I can't imagine that anyone could ever misinterpret you as an asshole, regardless of how things come across online! If we did superlatives again like Stephanie suggested, I'd have to vote for you for "Most Genuinely Nice Person".

Sorry to cause so much trouble. I was unaware of the gravity of this subject. I just happened to have Piper at the Gates of Dawn lying on my computer desk and thought it would be cool to be at a Features show and hear them play something totally unexpected like "Interstellar Overdrive." I realized that it isn't really a song that fits their style, but it is a song that I would be very excited to hear them play. I will try not to do anything else that will cause such an uproar.

Every time I hear "Serious," I think it would have been a great song for the Buzzcocks. Likewise, it would be really cool if the Features covered "What Do I Get?" or "Everybody's Happy Nowadays." Critics seem to like to compare the Features to The Kinks. I love both bands, but don't really see a strong connection. Nevertheless, I have never heard the Features cover a Kinks song. I nominate "David Watts" (although I would be thrilled to hear them attempt anything by Ray Davies). -------------------- Keith Hautala keith@lexingrad.net |
