 During the last show at the Boro, I endured through the tireless screams of the drunk girls screaming for the Features to play Psycho Killer. During this period I thought about two things: I hope to God they shut the fuck up soon and which song I would really like to hear the Features put their spin on. My vote goes to "Money Money Money" by ABBA, because Rollum plays disco beats well and it would be overall excellence. This leads to the new topic of discussion...If you could get the Features to play any song other than Jet or Psycho Killer, what would it be?

if you're going to go for some ABBA then my pick would be "S.O.S."..

my other choices would include:

"love me till the sun shines" by the kinks
"pushin' too hard" by the seeds
"black and white" by the db's
"hanging on the telephone" by the nerves
"she's my best friend" by the velvet underground
"disorder" by joy division (i'm still hoping one day for a joy division cover)
"cynical girl" by marshall crenshaw
"i found that essence rare" by gang of four

any of those would be fine...but i would much rather hear any of the new songs or armani suede over any cover.....

 If they were to do another cover, I'd like to see them go 180 degrees the opposite direction. Put their own spin on something. My vote(s) would be something like "Hairspray Queen" by Nirvana, or go way over the top cheese-ball fest like Asia's "Only Time Will Tell" I can already hear Parrish banging out the overly dramatic intro and Rollums disco hi-hat. "96 Tears" is a great song, and right up their alley. Almost made for them. I love it though when bands cover something totally unexpected. Just my $.02 worth.

 One more in the "96 Tears" vein. "Double Shot of My Baby's Love" by the Swinging Medallions. In fact, if you think about it. Kari-Ann and Double Shot have almost the same keyboard melody. Just a bit raunchier in "Double Shot"

 Whoa, Hairspray Queen by Nirvana! I could totally see the guys covering that, but with Matt doing a much better job with the vocals. Very funky beat for Roger, good drums for Rollum and a jangly guitar for Matt. Perfect stuff in my opinion.

That is one of my all-time top 10 EC and the Attactions songs (formerly number 1). I finally heard it live this summer and I was so happy that I hugged the stranger next to me.

It would be such a treat to hear this done by The Features. I am sure they would do it justice. And Parrish playing anything would bring a smile to my face.

As far as Elvis Costello goes I will add Clean Money, You Belong to Me, Moods for Moderns, and Wednesday Week.

I would really enjoy hearing "clean money". "goon squad" would be very very good to hear from the features. "this year's girl" would be nice to hear. "from a whisper to a scream" would be good. perhaps they could work it out as a duet between matt and parrish just like elvis and glenn from squeeze did it back on "trust".......

"Mannequin" is one of my favorite Wire songs, though i think "i am the fly" would also be cool for them to do.

"Turtles have short legs" is one of the cutest songs that i have heard in my entire life and i would love to hear that...can=my new favorite band

any joy division song would be fine in my book...."insight" would be cool

any roxy music song (pre-manifesto, even though "avalon" is a really cool album) would be highly enjoyable...."2 HB", "Beauty Queen", "Editions of You".....the list goes on and on, though "Mother of Pearl" would probably be the ultimate....

I would also like to add "underwater moonlight" by the soft boys and "my little red book" by love to this list.....and looking back through the old threads, i second brianeno2's motion for "non-alignment pact" by pere ubu....

If you're interested in hearing another interpretation of "Goon Squad", I know that Fastball covered it on Almost You: The Songs of Elvis Costello. I've yet to hear the song. I'm not a Fastball fan, so I'm kinda scared. Other artists such as Matt Pond, Pa and The Deathray Davies contribute songs as well.

i recall watching a vh1 "where are they now" thing on tommy tutone. they said he's a teacher in nashville. i didn't know you knew him and i didn't know he played in clover. that band has a lot of strange connections.

 I don't know Tommy Tutone, met him once at a party, (his real name is Jim something...) but can't claim to know him... He is a teacher in Bellvue now. I know the co-writer of the song, Alex Call. He was in Clover... Good call ELT. He also wrote a couple of Huey Lewis songs and several songs on Pat Benatar's Get Serious album. Now I know you're impressed.... LOL. Side note on Jenny... my roommate after college went to Penn State where their phone prefix was 867. His phone number? 867-5309. Said it wasn't bad (this was the early 90's) but every now and then they'd get a drunken call in the middle of the night with some dumbass asking for Jenny. The best part he said was that no one ever forgot their number.

Okay, I don't know if this is true or not, but I have heard that the guy who lives at 867-5309 is a fat, blind, gay, red-headed guy named Danno who gets very mad when you call his number. Can anyone verify this?

I don't know Tommy Tutone, met him once at a party, (his real name is Jim something...) but can't claim to know him... He is a teacher in Bellvue now. I know the co-writer of the song, Alex Call. He was in Clover... Good call ELT. He also wrote a couple of Huey Lewis songs and several songs on Pat Benatar's Get Serious album. Now I know you're impressed.... LOL. Side note on Jenny... my roommate after college went to Penn State where their phone prefix was 867. His phone number? 867-5309. Said it wasn't bad (this was the early 90's) but every now and then they'd get a drunken call in the middle of the night with some dumbass asking for Jenny. The best part he said was that no one ever forgot their number.
If anyone has ever had that number I bet they have at least one story.

"tickle!" apparently being danno's way of saying "see you later".

 ANYTHING by the cars, but "My Best Friend's Girl" and "Tonight She Comes"
"Red" by Mission of Burma would be nice.
Finally, the Talking Heads "Road to Nowhere", "Wild Wild Life", "Love for Sale" and "Love/Building on Fire." The drums and synth are straight up Features on "Road to Nowhere."

If nothing else, I think we'd all agree that it would be nice for a change to hear the Features play MORE covers. There's no shame in that. I was somewhat disappointed that the 2nd Request show over the summer only had one cover song (when we were promised "a few covers") and it was the predictable Psycho Killer.

i recall watching a vh1 "where are they now" thing on tommy tutone. they said he's a teacher in nashville. i didn't know you knew him and i didn't know he played in clover. that band has a lot of strange connections.
He teaches at Hillwood High.

 I don't think Tommy Tutone was in Clover... Alex Call, the co-writer of that song was. Alex and I used to hang out a bit when our wives (at the time for him GF) worked at the same place. He was full of great stories... I always made him tell Elvis Costello ones, as they backed him for his first album in the studio, before the Attractions were formed, or something like that... I may have my facts mixed up, but there's definitely a Clover/Elvis connection.


As for a Features cover, I heard a perfect one for their "new sound" Now don't laugh, but "Love Her Madly" by the Doors. That song would translate well into a Features song, and not really a true cover, but their own take on it. It has a nice Rhoades part, the cheesy organ, mostly rhythm guitar parts, and the song content fits them well. I'd love to hear them try that one.
